Designing sound for art in VR - Olafur Eliasson's 'Rainbow'

January 5, 2018

We're excited to announce the launch of a new interactive experience from Acute Art, the world's first VR art platform, featuring audio design and music by Intonic.

'Rainbow', a beautiful immersive work by celebrated international artist Olafur Eliasson, is essentially a re-imagining of his seminal piece from 1993 called 'Beauty', and addresses the themes of body consciousness, the ephemerality of experience and the serenity of natural phenomena.  In many ways there is no more ideal environment to augment this experience than in VR.

The sound for this piece certainly underwent many iterations, as the conceptual framework of the piece was crystallized and reformulated with a view to how this experience should be presented using VR technology.  Overall, there was a meditative feel to the sound environment, one where you could happily stay in the experience and explore its nooks and crannies, without feeling the need to move on or 'channel hop' to something else.

This piece forms a part of the new Acute Art Gallery series, which is a subscription-based service that provides access to the leading artists working at the intersection of art and technology in VR.  It is a fascinating model that could potentially democratize art in a way that has not been possible before due to the location-specific nature of many installations.
